I had an idea for a cable-based RepRap that you would install into a room/shipping container to turn the container into a printer.

I had never gotten around to making a scale prototype, but just came across this video of IPAnema, a similar design but as a large pick-and-place bot:

I think you could do something like this at scale with fishing line, especially now if we can calibrate the 'floor' using an inexpensive FSR.

Funny, I had a similar idea for GUS calibration, that is, with spring loaded encoders instead of steppers, but thought the concept too impractical. For most things, including 3D printing, it would be hard to avoid the strings colliding with the printed object.
